Stretching across 11 countries and reaching temperatures upwards of 130˚ F, the Sahara Desert is one of the most inhospitable places on our planet—and it’s growing fast. Already the largest desert in the world, the Sahara gains around 7,600 square kilometers a year. It is now 10% larger than it was a century ago, and it shows no signs of stopping.

 

Nevertheless, life persists.

 

For the past few months, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of desert oases. Constantly under pressure by external forces, these little ecosystems provide a sanctuary for plant and animal life in an otherwise near-uninhabitable environment. This is made possible by the oasis environment’s ability to reach and sustain an equilibrium.

 

Drain too much of the oasis’ water and the protective trees surrounding the ecosystem weaken, eventually caving to the pressure of the always-expanding desert and dooming the isolated environment. Flood the system and the many diverse species that call the desert home will be wiped out. The ecosystem will deteriorate, again engulfed by the hostile desert sand.

 

In both of these examples our little desert oasis was thrown out of equilibrium and, unable to return, eventually succumbed to the external forces of the surrounding desert. As humans, we are the same.

 

Our body is an oasis. Recently, there are more factors than ever trying to push us away from our baseline.
